Teeth Whitening

Woman’s smile before and after whitening.

Teeth naturally loss their brightness over time. Drinking coffee or tea, using tobacco and even certain childhood medications can cause your teeth to discolor or darken even faster than normal. Teeth whitening, also known as bleaching, often provides a dramatic difference, usually in a single dental office visit. Our highly skilled doctors at Rangel Dental in Morristown, New Jersey, help you get a whiter, brighter smile with our ZOOM! Teeth Whitening System.

ZOOM! Teeth Whitening

Our office uses the ZOOM! Whitening System, a widely used bleaching process that lightens discoloration of enamel and dentin while leaving the structure of your teeth unchanged. Before deciding whether ZOOM in-office teeth whitening is right for you, we perform a comprehensive examination of your teeth and gums to ensure they’re healthy. We take note of your existing dental work, such as veneers and crowns, which won’t respond to conventional whitening agents. We’ll also discuss your oral hygiene and lifestyle habits to determine whether teeth whitening will be beneficial.

Teeth Whitening Process

In-office teeth whitening usually takes an hour, but we may recommend teeth cleaning prior to your actual bleaching session. We apply a protective gel or a rubber shield over the lips and gums to protect the soft tissue. Next, we apply a bleaching agent containing carbamide peroxide to your teeth and enhance the action of the whitening agent with a specialized light for 15 minutes. We repeat this process for three 15-minute sessions per treatment to effectively break up stains and discoloration.

While in-office bleaching is the fastest way to achieve results, you may also opt for at-home bleaching. We take an impression of your teeth to make a customized mouth guard to hold the whitening gel against your teeth. We instruct you on how long to wear your mouth guard, which may vary from a couple hours per day to all night for up to four weeks, or longer if desired.

Teeth Whitening Aftercare

Avoid dark-colored foods and beverages for the first 48 hours after whitening, when teeth are more susceptible to staining. To properly maintain the whitening effects, teeth whitening aftercare includes an at-home touch-up kit with custom-fitted whitening trays. Use your custom trays only as directed by our office.
