If a tooth has more extensive decay, a dental crown may be the ideal aesthetic and functional restorative solution.

When your tooth has been damaged by injury or extensive decay, a well-placed dental crown provides an ideal aesthetic and functional restorative solution for many patients. At Rangel Dental in Morristown, New Jersey, we serve the surrounding area and Morris County with high-quality dental crowns and a host of other trustworthy services, providing our community access to better oral health.

The Dental Crown Process

At Rangel Dental, the process of placing a dental crown most commonly begins through CAD/CAM technology. This technological process allows us to produce a digital design of a dental fixture, which can then be fabricated from ceramic material.  By using the process, dentists can design a crown that looks and acts like your natural tooth and won’t interfere with your bite or ability to chew.

First the dentist will begin to prepare your tooth. Any decayed areas will be filed away and removed, and the resulting surfaces will be scored to ensure that the adhesive has a firm grip. Then the crown is designed and fabricated in the office while you wait.  The final crown will be placed on the same day and, once placed, a permanent crown can last many years.

Ceramic Dental Crowns

The type of dental crown your dentist will recommend depends on several factors, including the location of the affected tooth and what caused the damage. The most common type of dental crown we administer is ceramic. Ceramic’s color very closely matches the look of natural teeth, unlike metal and alloy crowns, and it’s almost impossible to tell the difference without a trained eye. This makes ceramic crowns ideal for front teeth.  Also the milled ceramics that we use for our same day crowns have enough strength for most back teeth.   Further, they don’t contain any metal, meaning that they won’t cause reactions for patients with allergies.

Other Types of Dental Crowns

Porcelain Fused to Metal

Though not as common as ceramic, porcelain-and-metal fused crowns have been used successfully for years. They have the same natural aesthetic as a ceramic crown but with extra durability from the metal beneath. These crowns are long-lasting, strong, and very resistant to wear without sacrificing appearance.

Gold Alloys

Gold alloy crowns are made of a combination of gold, copper, nickel, chromium, and other metals, making them extremely strong. Gold alloy also wears down very slowly akin to natural enamel. As a result, they can last an incredibly long time if properly cared for. The extra strength and durability make them ideal for patients who grind their teeth at night.

Zirconia

For the strongest crown available today, we now offer zirconia crowns.  These crowns are growing in popularity.  They are white in color, but are extremely strong.  They can withstand biting and chewing forces for an extended period and are ideal restorations for people who grind their teeth.
